AI Gives Modern Transportation Management a Bright Green Light

Stuck in traffic? Hitting red light after red light on the way to work? Wish you knew why you’ve come to a complete stop on the highway and whether there’s an alternate route you can take to get to your destination? Who among us hasn’t experienced the trials and tribulations of navigating an urban jungle? Well, hold on to your steering wheel. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to optimize every aspect of traffic management from real-time traffic management to predictive maintenance, enhanced safety protocols, and can even contribute to a cleaner environment by minimizing vehicle emissions.

Merging systems ahead

In their paper, “Navigating the Future of Secure and Efficient Transportation Systems Using AI and Blockchain,” researchers Jyotsna Ghildiyal Bijalwan, Jagendra Singh, Vinayakumar Ravi, Anchit Bijalwan, Tahani Jaser Alahmadi, Anchit Bijalwan, Tahani Jaser Alahmadi, Prabhishek Singh, and Manoj Diwakar explore the limitations of conventional encryption in real-world communications due to resource constraints. Additionally, it delves into the integration of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) in autonomous cars for trajectory management within Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs).

Furthermore, the study helps facilitate the integration of DRL in autonomous cars and the potential for blockchain technologies to safeguard secure data transfers in a rapidly evolving industry. AI prompts the introduction of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) which posits a future where vehicles communicate seamlessly with each other, traffic adopts in real time, and an autonomous future.

In Transportation We Trust?

The objective of the study was to simplify the complexities inherent in an ITS and the importance of security, privacy, and trust in getting the driving public to accept it. Because these systems will aggregate voluminous amounts of data, much of which is founded on an individual’s travel patterns, places traveled to and from, and driving preferences, securing the data against intrusion becomes critical.

Gaining users trust means providing transparency in the way systems operate, holding stakeholders accountable, and the utmost commitment to operating ethically.

On Transparency We Rely

A key component of any smart transportation system will be blockchain technology, known for its transparency and decentralized approach to data management.

The study focused on three objectives:

  • Advanced technology in transportation
  • Securing the data collected and ensuring it remains private
  • Fostering trust in the overarching systems as a whole

The study concludes that conventional encryption methods fall short in real world, real time communications. Integrating DRL and the decentralization and transparency blockchain technologies provide may hold the keys to effective, efficient, sustainable smart transportation systems.
