The case for hybrid intelligence

The conventional view of artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom, at least for now, is that human intelligence and artificial intelligence are two distinctly different cognitive processes. A proposal from Mutlu Cukurova, a professor of learning and artificial intelligence at University College London suggests an alternative approach — AI to achieve human-AI hybrid intelligence. Cukurova posits that hybrid human–AI systems can extend human cognition and also serve as an instrument for understanding human learning.

The paper presents three unique conceptualizations of AI: the externalization of human cognition, the internalization of AI models to influence human mental models, and the extension of human cognition via tightly coupled human–AI hybrid intelligence systems. Writing in the British Journal of Education Technology Cukurova presents his thesis, “The interplay of learning, analytics, and artificial intelligence in education: A vision for hybrid intelligence.”

Making the grade

Cukurova argues that not only can hybrid human–AI systems extend human cognition but AI can also serve as an instrument for understanding human learning. He continues that educating people about AI is about teaching AI to certain groups in the population-at-large to create AI experts, including AI in our school curricula and investing further in higher education institutes to improve capacity to sustain expertise in AI.

It’s the dawn of a new age, the age of AI. It’s worth educating our educators and ourselves about this transformative technology.
