In AI We Trust? Not So Much When It Comes To Our Healthcare Systems

A survey of American adults reveals their fears about the implementation of an unproven technology

When it comes to healthcare, people need to be able to trust — their physicians, nurses, and technicians. Curious about consumers’ attitudes toward the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in their healthcare, a pair of researchers recruited 2,039 adult volunteers to respond to a survey about the implementation of the technology into their care.

Paige Nong, PhD, an assistant professor in the Division of Health Policy & Management at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, Minneapolis and Jodyn Platt, PhD, an associate professor of learning health sciences and an associate professor of health management and policy in the Department of Learning Health Sciences, University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor learned that a majority of respondents — 65.8% — didn’t trust their healthcare system to use AI responsibly while 57.7% said they didn’t trust their healthcare system to make sure an AI tool wouldn’t harm them.

The study revealed that the male respondents trusted their healthcare system to use AI responsibly than the female respondents, but neither gender trusted that their healthcare system would shield them from AI-related harms.

A healthy distrust of AI in delivering healthcare is prudent, especially since the world is just settling in and adapting to a technology about which so little is known. That will prompt providers to validate these new technologies.

Top 3 Takeaways
